Pondless Waterfall…

We had this pondless waterfall installed back in the summer of 2008  I would absolutely love to have a pond here at Fishtail Cottage filled with koi fish.  I truly envy those that are able to have that type of water feature in their landscape.  With our children being so young at the time and our home constantly with kids scurrying in and out of the house, my husband was against any type of standing water in the gardens. He doesn’t usually care what I do when it comes to decorating or how I fill up the gardens, but with this topic, he wasn’t budging on his opinion. So we agreed on a Pondless Waterfall feature.

051The size isn’t very big and sometimes I do wish it was a bit larger, but the sound of the waterfall is incredible. We enjoy hearing it when sitting on the patio.  In the summertime, we can leave our windows open during the nighttime and the sound of the water flowing almost rocks me to sleep.

055 I’ve tried to ‘naturalize’ the area of the garden around it with grasses and even an evergreen Mountain Hemlock 053(not many evergreens found in my garden). Mountain Hemlocks are very slow growing…which is perfect for a smaller garden like mine.

Other plantings around the waterfall would include this amazingly fragrant Northern Hi-Lights Azalea.  The beautiful yellow blooms fill up an aroma in the garden that is so amazing it will make you turn your head and believe you are standing next to a Lilac or a an old English rose.

052I’ve pruned this beautiful Lace Leaf Maple to hover over the rocks so that the birds feel safe to pop in whenever they feel they need a bath.

I even have a cast iron musical angel that can be found if you look hard enough in the grasses…at night the lights come on to hi-light the water feature in the garden and it is just beautiful.

Tracie, this looks like a delightful spot in your garden. I would love the sound of the water trickling over rocks. It's another rainy day here but we're promised a sunny long weekend. Hugs, Pamela

A pondless waterfall has been on my list for a long time.... I have the perfect spot where it could drop several feet.... I just don't have the time to take care of a pond and I think this is probably a good alternative.... certainly enjoyed seeing yours! Larry

Your 'pondless waterfall' is lovely! I am on the hunt for a small fountain for a new little dooryard garden that I want to do. I am hoping to get out and find a suitable (and not too expensive) one, soon!
Love the maple, too! They are my hubby's favorite!

Your garden is beautiful, what a nice place just to sit and listen to the birds sings!
Hi Tracie, we have a pondless waterfall about the same size, 8 ft. I too sometimes wish it was bigger, but love the sound. Even with all of our children grown now we have lots of little grandies that love playing near it. A big pond would make me worry. We had a small pond at our previous home and this one is so much less maintenance. I love it for that. I love your landscaping. I have tried to do the same with mine. Loving it more each year. We installed ours in Aug. or Sept. of '2009' soon after moving in.
Hugs,
Jann

I love your pondless waterfall. It is just wonderful...and adds a lot to your gardens. Perfect- xo Diana
Love this water feature! We want to add one to our yard, too. I, too, don't have evergreens, they kill to many other plants or grasses! My neighbor has some that border my property so that is close enough. I like the larger thumbprints for the party!

What a beautiful, serene area! I've never seen a yellow azalea before - so pretty! This may be exactly what my yard needs! Hugs, Leena

Tracie,
I would love a waterfall water feature. How beautiful! I wrote down the name of the azalea and am going to see if its available and will grow in California. To have a scented azalea would be wonderful. I also admire your Japanese Maple. They can grow in So. CA but don't really like our soil ph as much as in your area.

I love all the contrast in foliage colors in the plants around your water feature--very pretty!

I got divorced last fall, and moved to OK from TX. Leaving my beautiful and practically new pondless waterfall behind. I love, love, loved the sound of the waterfall. Hope to at least get a little pond here going soon. Starting over with a new yard. Your blog is beautiful!

Lovely, Tracie! I'm looking to add a fountain of some sort this year - but no pond for me...too much upkeep. :-)
