Pondless Waterfall…
We had this pondless waterfall installed back in the summer of 2008 I would absolutely love to have a pond here at Fishtail Cottage filled with koi fish. I truly envy those that are able to have that type of water feature in their landscape. With our children being so young at the time and our home constantly with kids scurrying in and out of the house, my husband was against any type of standing water in the gardens. He doesn’t usually care what I do when it comes to decorating or how I fill up the gardens, but with this topic, he wasn’t budging on his opinion. So we agreed on a Pondless Waterfall feature.
The size isn’t very big and sometimes I do wish it was a bit larger, but the sound of the waterfall is incredible. We enjoy hearing it when sitting on the patio. In the summertime, we can leave our windows open during the nighttime and the sound of the water flowing almost rocks me to sleep.
I’ve tried to ‘naturalize’ the area of the garden around it with grasses and even an evergreen Mountain Hemlock (not many evergreens found in my garden). Mountain Hemlocks are very slow growing…which is perfect for a smaller garden like mine.
Other plantings around the waterfall would include this amazingly fragrant Northern Hi-Lights Azalea. The beautiful yellow blooms fill up an aroma in the garden that is so amazing it will make you turn your head and believe you are standing next to a Lilac or a an old English rose.
I’ve pruned this beautiful Lace Leaf Maple to hover over the rocks so that the birds feel safe to pop in whenever they feel they need a bath.
I even have a cast iron musical angel that can be found if you look hard enough in the grasses…at night the lights come on to hi-light the water feature in the garden and it is just beautiful.

I would love a waterfall water feature. How beautiful! I wrote down the name of the azalea and am going to see if its available and will grow in California. To have a scented azalea would be wonderful. I also admire your Japanese Maple. They can grow in So. CA but don't really like our soil ph as much as in your area.
