Our “Great Room” Reveal…
Okay, when I began blogging it was honestly to show off my Cottage Garden. But once I got started and seeing all of your beautiful homes – I began my quest to cozy up my home a little yet still have the functionality for a big family. As the kids are still somewhat little & they need space to lounge & do slumber parties, watch tv, & play video games. I liked the video games being played downstairs instead of the play room because I felt at least the kids were in the middle of the house, out in the open & not closed up in a room somewhere else. However, after multiple suggestions of moving my furniture in a little & filling it up w/more furniture, the hope of a cozy room & décor prevailed. So here is the before picture of what I started with…
First thing I we did was move the furniture around. We put one couch under the big window and left the one other couch under the pictures…I found fantastic sofa tables that I could place behind both couches. I didn’t get matching ones because I felt it better if they looked like they were “great finds”!
Which now I can create vignettes with and they each host a table lamp for better lighting…and also it brought the couches closer into the rug to make the space not so large.
We moved the shabby white table into the den (which is a whole other project) ha ha.
Deciding that the rocking chair & recliner & vintage sewing machine no longer worked – Since seating is always an issue for us during holidays & entertaining I set out to find to matching leather chairs and a an cushioned ottoman for more seating. & found these!
This was right around Thanksgiving & with holiday entertaining in mind, I decided to fit as much seating possible & purchased three stools to go under our pass through to the kitchen creating more seating~ oh boy was my husband happy!
Honestly, he doesn’t care what I do in the house when it comes to decorating…I just sold it as more places to sit when “the boys” come over for the football games!
Which is more than I’d like to share!
I knew I needed to bring in lighter colors to the room because everything is so dark with the maple colored woodwork in this room. So of course mismatched lighting had to be found & Etsy shops to decorate my new spaces that were available. Grabbed a few cozy throws from Costco & a fun basket to store them in.
I then had a painting party with myself and started painting everything white…(fireplace screen, photo frames, wire baskets & any décor that could be painted & used in this room)
Some took a few tries to get the right color white…(sound familiar to anyone?)
But in the end, I’m very happy! Everything turned out lovely & the room is very cozy now! Even the hubby loves it!!! I’m just happy I could work in the couches I dearly love & someday may replace…but for now my cottage themed room is perfect! with some new goodies to make it feel more cozy! It’s the new favorite room of the house.
These vignettes show some of my Etsy shop purchases…
This is the place I store my tea cups, garden & home décor books/magazines. (my husband secretly worked with the builder to build these shelves for me because I no longer had my tea room when we moved from our Quail Creek House)…sweet man!
Not the greatest picture – but as you can see all of our wood work is distressed & I absolutely love the character of our bronze handles (they are mixed throughout the house).
Of course like most of you, our home is a “work in progress” and there is so much more I want to change and do…but for now it’s a cozy place in our home with subtle new changes!
Hope you enjoyed a tour of my newly loved Great Room!
