Chalk Paint® decorative paint by Annie Sloan Project - Dining Hutch

So excited to share with you something I have been very busy working on here at Fishtail Cottage!  Annie Sloan Unfolded reached out to me not very long ago regarding their paint and wax product and wondered if we could work together on a project ~ it took me less than thirty seconds to reply with a YES!  Originally I was going to repaint a book shelf, but decided to give this kitchen hutch a makeover instead.  I love this hutch and was terrified of “change”.  But the crazy side of me taunted about the idea over and over and I decided to just do it.

We had planned on doing a simple kitchen remodel after the new year, but found out that the wall where the hutch sits is a structural wall and would take way more money than we wanted to spend ~ so giving this room a little change felt like a necessary idea.  I quickly took to Pinterest and created a “board” for ideas – then I studied the photo’s for what it was about each photo that attracted me to it. I chose Chalk Paint® decorative paint by Annie Sloan in the color “Old White” with those photo’s in mind.  As soon as the box arrived on my front porch, I was ready to start on this project! Ready, and super nervous that is…I read the book “Quick and easy paint transformations from Annie Sloan” and did as much research as I could to prepare myself to make this piece of furniture something I can be proud of.

The first thing I did is wipe the piece of furniture to remove all the dust. I also removed all the hardware and sand down only the parts that had holes. Using a synthetic bristle paint brush from Home Depot and I began to just begin to just paint.

 

The first coat went on so easy and smooth, but when I took a step back to admire my beautiful piece of furniture, it looked horrible! I quickly texted a friend and she assured me that the first coat sometimes doesn’t look the best.  Also pointed out that my wood was ‘raw’ and would absorb the paint.  

Needless to say, I didn’t sleep well that first night and wondered if I’d ruined one of my favorite pieces of furniture.  But look at the difference a second coat of Chalk Paint® did for my hutch!

After the paint was completely dry, I began the Annie Sloan Soft Wax Clear.  Starting with drawers to get a little practice.  I applied the clear wax in small sections and rubbed the wax with a cheese cloth. Then I applied the Annie Sloan Soft Wax Dark.  I kinda just winged this part by using a foam brush from Michaels to apply the dark wax and rubbing to get the desired look… I played a lot with this part sometimes sanding out what I decided was too much and applied more where it needed more.  

I am so glad that I accented the cracks in the wood of the back of the hutch to keep a little distinction between the boards.  Also, going a little heavier in certain indents certainly gave this piece extra character!

I could hardly stand the anticipation of putting my original décor back in place to see what it would look like, but I thought it would be best to wait over night before doing so.

The next morning couldn’t come fast enough ~ I immediately put myself to work on carefully selecting what to put on the hutch … I can see finding the right color balance and pieces will be a work in progress, but I think it looks pretty incredible!
