Succulents Caged!

So, I love love love this bird cage filled with succulents and have thought it would be an easy and fun project to try!

I already have a couple wooden bird cages around the house, purchased these from Ballard Design years ago. The yellow doesn’t go with my décor any longer, so a few months ago, I painted them layers of blue and then white and waited for spring to try this. I knew layering paint of different colors would look pretty as they weathered and peel.

Using the photo above (for inspiration), I of course need to put my own twist on things…I gathered the materials I needed. Cage, a variety of succulents, potting soil, landscape cloth, and moss from my own garden.

I opened the bottom of the cage to start my project. Layering the moss, landscape cloth and soil.

Breaking apart the succulents and setting them in the soil, the succulents will multiply in time. IMG_2292
Next, i sprinkled a little bit more soil over the top of the plants ~ then gathered the moss from underneath and tucked it up into the cage and closed the lid.

You can see it will take time for this cage to fill in so that the succulents spill out the side, but because these are smaller sized succulent plants, I think they’ll crawl through the wires on the sides just fine.

I will update you in a month or so with a new photo of how this is turning out – I can’t wait to see it too!

What a great idea! I can't wait to see them as they fill in ~
LOVE this idea!! Can't wait to see it when it's all filled in!
I like it Tracie. Maybe you can come and do one for me? I've had this nice iron birdcage hanging empty in the garden for years.

I literally have a metal birdcage sitting outside right now, waiting to do something similar. Looking forward to seeing yours grow.
Looking forward to the next stage of the cages/plantings. Look lovely right now. Glad I dropped by (from Beyond the Picket Fence).
